Description
The Yamato was one of the two biggest battleships worldwide, that was built in the modern naval warfare. With a length of 839 feet and a weight of almost 72.000 tons, the Yamato was a carrier of weapons like 18.1-inch-guns, 6 and 5-inch tower guns and 162 1-inch-antiaircraft guns.
During its service, the Yamato served in the south pacific against the allied marine forces, mostly in the battle of Midway, and had many appearances in the Philippines, including the battle of Samar - one of the biggest sea battles in history, with no doubt. In the last desperate months of the second world war, the Yamato met its fiery fate in the hands of the allied marine task force 58 during the Ten-Ichi-Gi operation, by the coast of Okinawa, Japan. Originally a suicide mission, that would have stranded the Yamato in the vincinity of Okinawa - and made it to a fixed front against the invasion of American forces.
