The 10 Best Tanks in the World: Ranking & Comparison

The Leopard 2 is the best main battle tank in this ranking in 2026, even though its base version has served since 1979. Norway chose it after a direct comparison with South Korea's K2. Russia's T-14, often billed as a future tank, still has not gone beyond limited production according to the US Army.
This ranking weighs firepower, protection, mobility, system maturity and upgrade path. Where those are close, the documented combat record decides.

Who builds the best tanks in the world?
No single manufacturer builds all ten main battle tanks. For the German Leopard 2A8 order, the Bundeswehr names KNDS as prime contractor; the German company is KNDS Deutschland. General Dynamics Land Systems builds the M1A2 SEPv3, while Hyundai Rotem builds the K2. The Challenger 3 is being developed by Rheinmetall BAE Systems Land, the British joint venture between BAE Systems and Rheinmetall Defence UK. Procurement prices for the leading models appear in the overview of the ten most expensive tanks.
The ten main battle tanks in detail
For models based on vehicles from several countries, the international RC tank models category provides a suitable route into the range.
1. Leopard 2
KNDS lists more than 3,500 Leopard 2 in service across 22 nations. That broad user base and a confirmed upgrade path put it at the top of this ranking. In Norway's comparison against the K2, the choice fell on the Leopard 2 as the best solution for the country. The Bundeswehr operates the Leopard 2 A7V. It has ordered 123 newly built Leopard 2 A8 (as of November 2025); according to the Bundeswehr, the first are due to reach the troops from 2027. The A8 features the 120 mm L55A1 gun, the Trophy active protection system and armour reinforced over the A7V. The family extends from the Leopard 2A6 through the 2A7V to the A8.

The Bundeswehr describes the Leopard 2 as one of the most modern main battle tanks in the world. The A8 programme keeps growing internationally. According to KNDS, the Czech Republic joined as the third country in September 2025, with an initial 44 vehicles and an option for 14 more. Torro offers the Leopard 2A6 as a 1:16 RC model.
2. M1A2 Abrams SEPv3
In the 1991 Gulf War, the US Army lost not a single Abrams to enemy fire, according to the US General Accounting Office. Several M1A1 crews even reported direct frontal T-72 hits with minimal damage. That combat record earns the Abrams second place; the current stage of the line is the M1A2 SEPv3. The M1 Abrams has served with the US Army since 1980. The SEPv3 carries the Trophy active protection system; the successor programme M1E3 is in development. The US Army describes the Abrams as “the most lethal, protected tank in the world”. Production continues: Poland received the first 28 of its 250 ordered SEPv3 in January 2025. Technical differences between the two systems are summarised in the direct comparison of the Leopard 2 and Abrams.
The shop groups models of the American vehicle under M1A2 Abrams RC models.

3. K2
The K2 stands for the largest arms export contract a South Korean company has ever won. In August 2025, Poland signed a second contract for a further 180 K2. That production and export maturity puts it in third place. It is being delivered new in large numbers. The K2 entered series production and troop service in July 2014; Poland's defence ministry reported that the first 180 K2 had arrived by November 2025. Hyundai Rotem lists a 120 mm L/55 smoothbore gun, an autoloader, hydropneumatic suspension and a battlefield management system; the crew is three. The Polish K2PL variant also brings local manufacturing: in April 2026, Hyundai Rotem agreed production and maintenance in Poland with the Bumar-Łabędy works.

4. Merkava Mk 4 Barak
On 1 March 2011, near the Gaza border, a Merkava fitted with the Trophy system defeated an anti-tank attack in combat. It was the first documented combat intercept by a modern active protection system. That first secures the Merkava Mk 4 fourth place. The Merkava Mk 4 has been in service with the Israel Defense Forces since 2004; Israel's Ministry of Defence presents the Barak as the current Mk 4 version with Trophy. The protective thinking reaches into the basic layout: the IDF explicitly describes the front-mounted engine as additional shielding for the crew. In 2025, Israel's procurement committee approved an expansion of tank production; for the Barak, the IDF lists updated sensors and a computer-assisted mission system.
Models of the Israeli vehicle are grouped in the Merkava MK IV RC models category.
5. Type 10
Around 44 tonnes combat-ready, up to 70 km/h both forwards and in reverse: none of the ten tanks is lighter. That puts the Type 10 in fifth place. Japan's newest tank is still being procured and comes networked from the factory. The first production vehicle went to Japan's Ground Self-Defense Force on 10 January 2012. The defence budget for 2026 includes further procurement; between 2010 and 2022, Japanese budgets funded a total of 117 vehicles. The JGSDF describes the Type 10 as Japan's newest domestic main battle tank. It carries a 120 mm smoothbore gun and operates with a three-man crew. It shares its situational data in real time with other vehicles through the 10NW command network.

6. Leclerc XLR
France's Ministry of the Armed Forces lists the Leclerc as the first third-generation main battle tank. Its autoloader replaces the fourth crew member; firing on the move is at the core of the design. A late start on modernisation holds it in sixth place, as only the XLR upgrade now brings it back up to date. France's procurement agency DGA reported a total of 200 Leclerc XLR on order in January 2025, with 34 delivered by the end of 2024. The Leclerc has been in service since 1993, weighs 56 to 63 tonnes depending on configuration according to official figures, and operates with a three-man crew. The XLR upgrade integrates the tanks into the networked SCORPION system and, according to the manufacturer, adds jammers against radio-triggered roadside bombs and all-round protection against anti-tank weapons.

7. Challenger 3
The British government announced the Challenger 3 at contract signature in 2021 as the future most lethal tank in Europe. While trials continue, it stays in seventh place. The Challenger has a completed firing trial and a fixed schedule to show; the Type 99A, by contrast, lacks reliable data. Under an 800 million pound contract, 148 Challenger 2 hulls are being comprehensively rebuilt; the new turret brings the switch from a rifled gun to the 120 mm L55A1 smoothbore. The Challenger 3 has completed its first crewed firing trial; the programme reported the milestone in January 2026. The programme remains in its demonstration phase, with initial operating capability planned for 2027 and full capability for 2030. Its predecessor, the Challenger 2, has been in service since 1998 and belongs to the same line of British tank development.
8. Type 99A
The Type 99A is the developed version of the Type 99, China's first mass-produced third-generation main battle tank. A US Army paper from 2026 calls it proven. Key figures hold it at eighth place: engine output and service date remain unpublished. The Type 99A carries a 125 mm smoothbore gun and operates with a three-man crew. China's Ministry of National Defense shows it active with units of the People's Liberation Army, its sole operator. The 99A was officially presented at the 2015 victory parade; the Type 99 family first appeared in public in 1999. The same US paper now documents trials of a hybrid derivative.
9. T-90M
Rostec calls the T-90 the commercially most successful tank of the 21st century, with more than a thousand exported according to the state corporation. The T-90M is its latest stage. It stays in ninth place because that top billing is about sales, not combat value. It still ranks above the T-14 because the T-90M is the one actually serving in numbers. Rostec reported the first T-90M deliveries to the Russian army in 2020. The manufacturer lists a new turret and positions for the driver, gunner and commander. The T-90 was accepted into service on 5 October 1992; production began in 1993. India signed the first export contract in February 2001 for 310 vehicles, according to Rostec. Most Indian T-90s have since been built under licence in India itself.
The Russian RC tanks category groups relevant models from this development line.
10. T-14
The T-14 was presented as the first main battle tank with an unmanned turret and an armoured crew capsule in the hull, according to Rostec. A US Army paper from March 2026 confirms the unmanned turret but lists only limited production. That revolutionary design without regular fielding remains a promise, and it leaves the T-14 in last place. The prototypes appeared at the Moscow victory parade on 9 May 2015; during the rehearsal, one of the vehicles initially broke down. The tank combines the unmanned turret with a 125 mm smoothbore gun and a three-man crew. The original procurement goal of 2,300 vehicles by 2020 was missed by a wide margin. Even Rostec chief Sergey Chemezov conceded in 2024 that the T-14 is too expensive and that the army would rather buy the T-90. No regular service introduction is documented.
Which is the strongest tank?
The Leopard 2 combines firepower, protection and mobility with a confirmed upgrade path from the fielded A7V to the ordered A8. The US Army emphasises the Abrams' lethality and protection. The Merkava Mk 4 Barak centres on sensors and active protection, while the K2 pairs an autoloader with hydropneumatic suspension. Concrete resistance values of modern armour remain unpublished.
What is the most advanced tank in the world?
The Bundeswehr counts the Leopard 2 among the most modern main battle tanks in the world. The Merkava Mk 4 Barak combines updated sensors with a computer-assisted mission system. The K2 uses an autoloader and a battlefield management system; the Challenger 3 is undergoing trials with a new digital architecture. How different the standards once were is clear from the best tanks of the Second World War.
