History: The T-34

The most-produced tank of the Second World War

With over 50,000 units built, the T-34 was the most-produced tank of the Second World War. Its superior capabilities showed early on, above all in terms of mobility and armour protection. It was developed under the direction of chief designer Mikhail Koshkin; the first prototypes were completed in January 1940, and series production began that same year at the Kharkov Locomotive Factory, from 1941 also at the Stalingrad Tractor Factory.

The early versions carried a 76.2 mm cannon (initially the L-11 type, later the F-34) and a cramped turret in which the commander also had to act as gunner — which made it harder to keep an overview in battle. From 1943 the tank received a larger turret with two hatches, originally developed for the KV-85; between January and March 1944 this became the T-34/85 with the new 85 mm cannon. The crew grew from four to five men, and commander and gunner were now separate roles.

What is the difference between BB and IR on the T-34/85?

BB models fire 6 mm plastic pellets up to 25 metres — you can see the shot. IR models fight their battles with an invisible infrared beam, against vehicles of the same series; on the Torro Pro Edition the IR versions additionally have barrel recoil and muzzle flash. The HengLong models combine both systems. Matching 6 mm ammunition is also available biodegradable — in white and green.

What are the advantages of the Torro Pro Edition?

Metal equipment with lower hull, turret and tracks as well as drive and idler wheels, plus a turret that rotates a full 360°. The paintwork is applied by airbrush (green or Winter) — or you choose the unpainted version as a basis for your own finish. Two versions additionally have switchable cannon smoke when firing, and the IR versions have barrel recoil and muzzle flash.

What are the advantages of the HengLong Torro-Edition BB+IR?

Both combat systems in one model (BB and IR), ready to run straight away with battery and USB charging cable, plus machine-gun sound and a smoke unit with smoke fluid. Available with metal tracks on request — the most elaborate version additionally brings metal drive and idler wheels, metal road wheels, metal swing arms, ball bearings and barrel recoil.

Who is the Torro-WSN Play Edition model worth it for?

For getting started: the WSN model brings an IR combat system with friend-or-foe recognition, illuminated machine-gun fire with a recoil effect and individual-link tracks. The metal equipment and smoke function of the Pro and HengLong editions are not on board here — ideal for anyone who wants an uncomplicated start.

When are the metal-track versions worth it?

Metal tracks add noticeably more weight to the hull — the model sits more firmly on the ground and the driving behaviour feels considerably more realistic. They are also much more robust than plastic tracks and do not break even under intensive use. On the T-34/85 they are available either on the HengLong BB+IR edition, in some cases with additional metal parts such as drive and idler wheels; on the Torro Pro Edition metal tracks are fitted as standard.

Do the T-34/85 models have a smoke function?

On the Torro Pro Edition all versions produce driving/exhaust smoke from the exhaust pipes, and two versions (green with BB or with IR) additionally have switchable cannon smoke when firing. The HengLong BB+IR models have a smoke unit with smoke fluid. The Torro-WSN model has no smoke function. Cannon smoke when firing is something different — models with this function are listed in the overview BB with cannon smoke.
