Which scale is right for beginners: 1/24 or 1/16?

For a compact, affordable start, choose 1/24. These ready-to-run models are made for the living room, although they can also be driven carefully on a terrace or balcony, not on the lawn. The larger 1/16 scale is the one most enthusiasts use indoors and outdoors. Both scales come with proportional 2.4 GHz control as standard.

Proportional control regulates the speed continuously, from a slow crawl to full throttle. The 2.4 GHz technology also allows several vehicles to run at the same time without interfering with each other. Scales below 1/24 are generally designed more for collecting and display than for driving.

Play, Hobby or Pro Edition: where should you start?

HengLong offers its Play Edition in 1/24, while the Torro Play Edition uses the 1/16 scale. The HengLong Torro Edition combines BB and IR in one model. Torro's Hobby and Pro Editions provide more equipment than the Play Editions, with barrel recoil and muzzle flash added to the Pro Edition IR models.

HengLong models rotate their turrets through 320° (160° to each side), while the Torro Pro Edition manages a full 360°. All editions are supported by the same spare-parts supply and service.

IR or BB: which battle system for your first tank?

IR uses an invisible infrared beam instead of ammunition, so battles can also take place indoors. A hit triggers a simulated system failure. BB is designed for target practice with a visible result and fires 6 mm plastic pellets up to 25 metres. BB tanks can be driven anywhere, but firing belongs outdoors; safety glasses are recommended, especially for children.

Torro IR versions battle vehicles of the same series with an invisible infrared beam. An IR transmitter, installed either in the gun barrel or in the turret depending on the model, works with an IR receiver on the opposing vehicle. The receiver registers a hit and the tank responds with a simulated system failure. The infrared receiver is not included with every model, and both vehicles need one for a battle.

The Torro BB versions fire 6 mm plastic pellets up to 25 metres. Biodegradable ammunition comes in packs of 5,000 in white and green, and the firing unit sits inside the model. Plastic or metal: what does a beginner really need?

Plastic is perfectly adequate for starting out and provides the full driving experience straight from the box. Metal tracks weigh more than plastic ones, so the model sits more firmly on the ground and feels noticeably more realistic to drive; they are also considerably more robust and do not break even under heavy use.

At around €130, the 1/16 RC Tiger I in grey from the Torro Play Edition is the classic first 1/16 tank: infrared battles against vehicles of the same series, no ammunition, indoor-friendly.
