Leopard 2A7 versus Challenger 2: Who will win?

The Leopard 2A7V reaches 68 km/h and produces 1,500 PS; the Challenger 2 stays at 59 km/h and 1,200 bhp. On the road the British tank travels further: 550 km against about 300 km from the Bundeswehr data sheet. These figures alone do not decide a battle: protection, crew, ammunition, terrain and logistics all weigh in.

Challenger 2 vs Leopard 2: Who wins?

On speed and engine output the Leopard 2A7V leads; on road range the Challenger 2 does. The A7V is the most modern German variant in service: by 2023 the Bundeswehr had converted 104 older Leopard 2 tanks to this standard. On the British side the Challenger 2 serves today, while its successor Challenger 3 remains under trial.

How fast is a Leopard 2A7V?

The Bundeswehr lists 68 km/h for the Leopard 2A7V; its MTU diesel delivers 1,500 PS. The British Army gives the Challenger 2 59 km/h on the road and 40 km/h off-road. The Challenger's Perkins CV12 produces 890 kW (1,200 bhp).

The two armies report range in different formats. The British Army gives 550 km on the road and 250 km off-road with internal fuel. The Bundeswehr data sheet lists about 300 km for the Leopard 2A7V without separate road and cross-country values. Mass also depends on configuration: the Challenger 2 weighs 62.5 tonnes without and up to 75.0 tonnes with add-on armour.

How do the Leopard 2A7V and Challenger 2 guns differ?

Both tanks carry a 120 mm main gun, but the systems differ. The Leopard 2A7V mounts the L55A1 smoothbore gun. The Challenger 2 carries the British L30A1 rifled gun with 47 rounds. Barrel design, ammunition and approvals differ; the shared calibre does not make ammunition or components interchangeable. No direct public firing comparison between the two guns is documented.

Which tank has better armour?

The Challenger 2 carries Dorchester 2 composite armour with additional modules available. For the Leopard 2A7V, the Bundeswehr describes a reinforced hull and passive add-on armour at the front. Both armies keep comparable resistance figures secret.

The British Army describes the Challenger 2 as prioritising firepower and protection. The Bundeswehr presents the Leopard 2 as a balance of firepower, protection and mobility.

Did Greece compare Challenger 2 with Leopard 2?

Yes. Greece chose 170 new Leopard 2HEL tanks in 2002; the defence ministry in Athens records decisions from 1 March and 11 June 2002. In its own retrospective, KNDS names the Challenger 2 alongside the M1A2, Leclerc, T80U and T84 as contenders at the time.

Athens never released the full requirements and individual results of the selection. The Leopard 2HEL was based on the Leopard 2A6 and was not identical to the later A7V. Procurement decisions also weigh training, industrial participation, logistics, delivery and contract terms.

Is the Challenger 2 the best tank in the world?

No. The Challenger 2 pairs a heavy protection concept with the L30A1 rifled gun and a crew of four. The Leopard 2A7V is faster and more powerful. Armies also judge range, infrastructure, ammunition, sensors and support according to their missions. In Greece's 2002 selection, the Challenger 2 lost out to the Leopard 2.

Challenger 3 vs Leopard 2: What changes?

The Challenger 3 receives a 120 mm smoothbore gun, which manufacturer RBSL identifies as the L55A1. That moves it closer to the Leopard 2A7V in main armament. It also gains new sights, digital architecture and modular armour; an active protection system is under evaluation. The programme remains in demonstration and trials in July 2026. The British Army plans initial operating capability with 18 vehicles in 2027.

RBSL and the UK procurement agency reported the first crewed live firings in January 2026; manufacturer technicians operated the turret. The British Army calls the new engine improved but has not released an output figure.
